Managing Touchscreen and Guided Access in Proto Cloud
| Applies to | Proto Epic, Proto M, Proto Luma, and Proto M2 devices linked to Proto Cloud |
| Purpose | Explain how to enable or disable touchscreen controls and how to enable or exit Guided Access mode from Proto Cloud. |
Overview
Proto Cloud includes a Touchscreen setting for each linked device. The available options are Enabled, Guided Access, and Disabled. Use Enabled when users should be able to interact normally with the device, Disabled when touch input should be turned off, and Guided Access when the device should remain locked to a single app or content experience during public demos, installations, trade events, or client-facing sessions.
Prerequisites
· An active Proto Cloud account with administrator or device-management permissions.
· A linked Proto device: Epic, M, Luma, or M2.
· The device must be powered on, online, and connected to Proto Cloud.
· Content or apps should already be assigned to the device if Guided Access will be used for a specific experience.
Touchscreen Mode Options
| Mode | What it does | Recommended use |
| Enabled | Allows normal touchscreen interaction on the Proto device. | Standard use, local content browsing, local app control, and setup tasks. |
| Disabled | Turns off touchscreen interaction from the device. | Preventing local interaction when the device should be controlled remotely through Proto Cloud. |
| Guided Access | Keeps touch interaction active but prevents users from exiting the running app or experience. | Kiosk-style deployments, public demos, client presentations, and events. |
Procedure 1: Access Device Settings
1. Log in to Proto Cloud.
2. Open the Devices section from the main menu.
3. Select the device you want to manage.
4. Under the Device Details menu, click Settings.
5. Locate the Touchscreen drop-down menu.
Procedure 2: Enable the Touchscreen
1. In the Device Details menu under Settings, open the Touchscreen drop-down menu.
2. Select Enabled.
3. Confirm the setting has been applied.
4. Test the device locally by tapping the touchscreen. The device should respond to touch input.
Use this mode when customers or operators need to browse content, launch apps locally, or perform normal touchscreen workflows.
Procedure 3: Disable the Touchscreen
1. In the Device Details menu under Settings, open the Touchscreen drop-down menu.
2. Select Disabled.
3. When prompted, create a secure PIN.
4. Record the PIN in the approved installation log or handoff notes. Do not share the PIN with public users
5. Confirm the setting has been applied.
6. Test the device locally. Touch input should no longer control the interface.
Use this mode when the device should be controlled from Proto Cloud and local users should not interact with the device screen.
Procedure 4: Enable Guided Access Mode
1. In the Device Details menu under Settings, open the Touchscreen drop-down menu.
2. Select Guided Access.
3. When prompted, create a secure PIN. Will present 2 options - Pin to open content and settings, and Pin to open device settings.
4. Record the PIN in the approved installation log or handoff notes. Do not share the PIN with public users.
5. Using Proto Cloud, launch your application, persona or piece of content.
6. Confirm Guided Access is active. Touch interaction remains enabled, but users will not be able to exit the running app or content experience.
Procedure 5: Launch an App or Persona on Startup
For guided or kiosk-style deployments, configure the intended app or content to launch automatically on startup before the event begins.
1. While Guided Access is active, return to the Apps and Personas tab under Device Details.
2. Choose the app or persona that should run on the device.
3. Click the three-dot menu next to the app or content name.
4. Select Launch on Startup.
5. Launch the app or persona manually to begin the locked session.
6. Reboot the device once, when practical, to confirm the correct app or persona starts automatically.
Procedure 6: Exit Guided Access Mode
1. Log into the device’s owner Proto Cloud account.
2. Go to Devices and select the device currently in Guided Access.
3. Open Settings and locate the Touchscreen drop-down menu.
4. Change the Touchscreen setting from Guided Access to Enabled or Disabled.
5. Enter the Guided Access PIN when prompted.
6. Confirm the device has exited Guided Access.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Likely cause | Resolution |
| Cannot exit Guided Access | Incorrect PIN or insufficient account permissions | Verify the PIN and confirm the user has administrator or device-management access in Proto Cloud. |
| App does not launch after reboot | Launch on Startup was not enabled for the intended app or content | Return to Apps and Content, select the three-dot menu for the app or content, and enable Launch on Startup. |
| Device does not respond after a setting change | Device may be offline, disconnected, or delayed in syncing settings | Restart the device, confirm the device is online in Proto Cloud, and reapply the setting. |
| Touchscreen needed for local content playback | Touchscreen is set to Disabled | Change Touchscreen to Enabled before using local touchscreen workflows. |
No access to cloud/Internet to Re-able touchscreen | Need cloud access to re-enable. No internet available | How to locally enable touchscreen |
Best Practices
· Enable Guided Access for public demos, client presentations, trade shows, and unattended installations.
· Keep the Guided Access PIN secure and record it in the installation log or customer handoff notes.
· Confirm Launch on Startup before rebooting the device for an event.
· Disable Guided Access before firmware updates, troubleshooting, or major Proto Cloud reconfiguration.
· Use Disabled only when local touch interaction should be intentionally blocked.
