Ensure that each person who uses the product has read and understood this guide and its safety instructions before using this product. Failure to do so can result in serious injury or death.
Follow all the instructions. This will avoid fire, explosions, electric shocks or other hazards that may result in damage to property and/or severe or fatal injuries.
Keep all safety information and instructions for future reference and pass them on to subsequent users of the product.
The manufacturer is not liable for cases of material damage or personal injury caused by incorrect handling or non-compliance with the safety instructions. In such cases, the warranty will be voided.

2.1 INTENDED USE AND REASONABLE FORESEEABLE MISUSE
The Proto Luma is a device intended to present live or pre-recorded content. The Luma is intended for indoor use only. It is not intended to be used near water or in direct sunlight. Do not climb on the Luma.
The Luma shall be used with the following software, original accessories, and components only:
- Proto Transport Case
- HoloStudio Pro
- Proto Studio App
- Proto Cloud
The product may only be used in accordance with the instructions described in this guide.
Any use other than those described in this guide is considered as non-intended use. This will also invalidate the warranty.
2.2 PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The Luma presents pre-recorded or live holographic content. The content can be delivered through the Proto Cloud or from an attached PC or camera.

3. SAFETY
Read and understand this guide and its safety instructions before using this product. Failure to do so can result in serious injury or death.
3.1 HOW TO USE THE PRODUCT SAFELY
3.1.1 VULNERABLE PEOPLE SAFETY INFORMATION
- This device is not intended for use by persons (including children) with restricted physical, sensory or intellectual capability or lack of experience and/or knowledge.
- The Luma complies with the safety standards for electromagnetic devices. Contact your physician prior to use if you have a pacemaker or other implanted device.
3.1.2 TECHNICAL LIFESPAN
The technical lifespan of the Luma is five (5) years of use. Dispose of the product when the Luma is expired.
3.1.3 INTENDED USE SAFETY INFORMATION
- Use the Luma only for its intended use as described in this user guide.
- Do not expose the Luma to temperatures above 140°F / 60°C or below 14°F / -10°C.
3.1.4 INSTALLATION SAFETY INFORMATION

Check the Luma for damage after unpacking. If there is any visible damage, contact Proto.
- Install the Luma on a flat, stable surface that is strong enough to support 1,000 lbs.
- Install the Luma in a well-ventilated and air-conditioned space.
- Do not install near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other devices that produce heat.
- Do not install the Luma near water or in direct sunlight.
3.1.5 ELECTRICAL SAFETY INFORMATION
- Check the electrical cable damage before electrical installation.
- Only use extension cords or adapters rated for at least 10 amps (10A).
- Only connect the Luma to a grounded socket with earth leakage protection, using the provided power cable or an extension cord/adapter rated for at least 10 amps (10A)

Immediately unplug the Luma from the wall outlet:
- if it has been damaged
- if water or another substance enters the Luma
- if you smell smoke or other odors coming from the Luma
- during lightning storms
- when unused for long periods of time
3.1.6 MAINTENANCE SAFETY INFORMATION
- Review the instructions in the Cleaning section before cleaning the Luma.
- Disconnect the power supply before cleaning the Luma. Do not use abrasive cleaning cloths or chemicals.
3.1.7 SERVICE AND REPAIR SAFETY INFORMATION
The Luma contains no user serviceable parts. Contact Proto for service or repair.
3.2 SAFE DISPOSAL
Follow the instructions in the Disposal section in this user guide for safe disposal of the Luma.

4. TRANSPORTING, UNPACKING, AND STORING
4.1 TRANSPORTING
The Luma can be shipped inside the Transport Case. If you plan to transport the Luma or store it when not in use, Proto recommends utilizing the Transport Case.
4.1.1 DIMENSIONS
RISK OF TILTING Follow the instructions in this guide when moving the Luma.
4.1.2 LIFTING, HANDLING, AND TRANSPORTING
- Lift, handle, and transport the Luma inside the Transport Case.
- Do not attempt to move the Transport Case when the door is open.
- Use a forklift truck or pallet jack to lift the Transport Case.
- Do not stand or walk under the lifted Transport Case. Do not attempt to move or shift the Transport Case while it is raised. You will damage the Transport Case.
- Place the Transport Case on a trailer with a flat surface and sufficient capacity.
- Check that all latches are fully seated prior to transporting.

Secure the Transport Case against shocks using clamping straps with sufficient strength. Make sure there is no possibility of sudden movements and or instability.
4.3 UNPACKING THE ROADIE CASE
- The Transport Case is designed for the Luma and its accessories only. Do not use for other items as it may cause damage to the Transport Case and/or injure users.
- Casters should be fully seated in the sockets before lowering the unit onto the casters.
To unpack the Transport Case:
1. Position the Transport Case on a flat surface in the upright position.
2. Twist and open each latch and open the main door.
3. Lower the ramp.
4. Position at least one person on each side of the Luma.
5. Carefully roll the Luma down the ramp.
6. Raise the ramp.
7. Close the door and twist and lock each latch.
4.6 PACKAGE CONTENTS

5.2 CONNECTING TO POWER
1. Turn the power switch to OFF.
2. Connect the power cable to the Luma.
3. Connect the power cable to the outlet.
A 10A power inverter or power strip is recommended to protect the Luma from power surges.
Only use extension cords or adapters rated for at least 10 amps (10A).
4. Turn the power switch to ON.
Make sure that people cannot step on any electrical cables or trip over the cables. Do not put objects on the cables.
Do not use non-standard power sources, such as generators or inverters, even if the voltage and frequency appear acceptable.
Do not overload your wall outlet or power strip. Confirm that it is rated to handle the total current drawn by the Luma and any other connected devices.
5.3 CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET
To connect to the internet using Ethernet:
- Use an Ethernet cable to connect the luma LAN port to a modem or other network device (for example, a switch or a router).
To connect to the internet using Wi-Fi:
- To add or edit Wi-Fi networks, unlock the home screen and navigate to Settings>Network Settings.
- Under Network Settings select the Wi-Fi option
- Make sure the Wi-Fi toggle is set to "on".
- To add a new network, select a network from the Available Networks section and enter and enter the password for the network, if any.
- Click "Connect".
- To view an existing network, click on the network name under the Saved Networks section to view network details.
- To test the network, hit "Test Network" or to forget the network, hit "Forget Network"

5.4 TURNING OFF THE LUMA
To turn off the Luma, turn the power switch to OFF on the Luma's connection panel.
6. PLAYING CONTENT
The Luma can play online content from the Proto Cloud or local content from a PC or camera. To play online content, the Luma will need access to the internet.
6.1 CREATING A PROTO CLOUD ACCOUNT
1. Visit cloud.protohologram.com on your PC or mobile device.
2. Click Sign Up.
3. Type your email address and name.
4. Type and confirm your password.
5. Agree to the terms of service.
6. Click Sign Up.
You will receive an email to verify your account.
6.2 LINKING YOUR ACCOUNT WITH A LUMA
1. Turn on the Luma. Follow onscreen instructions to connect your Luma to internet, if you haven’t already.
2. Scan the QR code with your mobile device.
OR
Visit cloud.protohologram.com/activate on your PC or mobile device.
3. Type the activation code.
6.3 UPLOADING AND ASSIGNING CONTENT FROM THE PROTO CLOUD
1. Visit cloud.protohologram.com on your PC or mobile device.
2. Log in.
3. Navigate to the Content page in the side menu.
4. Click Upload Content and follow the prompts on screen.
5. Assign the content you wish to play to your desired Proto device(s).
6.4 PLAYING CONTENT FROM THE PROTO CLOUD
1. Visit cloud.protohologram.com on your PC or mobile device.
2. Log in.
3. Navigate to the devices page
4. Tap or click a device.
5. Tap or click the content to play. (Content must be assigned to the device before playing).
7. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
7.1 CLEANING THE TOUCHSCREEN
1. Turn off and unplug the Luma.
2. Wipe the screen with the microfiber cloth using a circular motion.
Do not press hard on the LCD screen during cleaning. Doing so may cause scratches on the protective film.
3. If needed, lightly apply water, isopropyl alcohol (up to 55% IPA), or glass cleaner to the cloth, wipe the screen, and allow the screen to dry. Do not spray any liquid directly onto the screen.
4. Turn on the Luma.
7.2 CLEANING THE CABINET
Clean the cabinet using a slightly damp cloth.
8. TROUBLESHOOTING
8.1 IDENTIFYING AND SOLVING PROBLEMS

8.2 REPAIR BY SKILLED PERSONS
All servicing and repairs should be performed by an authorized Proto representative.
Servicing is required when the Luma has been damaged in any way, such as power-supply cord or plug is damaged or if the Luma has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.
9. DISPOSAL
9.1 DISPOSAL OF ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS
This device shall not be treated as unsorted municipal waste, but shall be collected separately. Dispose of the device via a collection point for the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment if you live within the EU and in other European countries that operate separate collection systems for waste electrical and electronic equipment. By disposing of the device in the proper manner, you help to avoid possible hazards for the environment and public health that may otherwise be caused by improper treatment of waste equipment. The recycling of materials contributes to the conservation of natural resources. |
9.2 DISPOSAL OF PACKAGING WASTE
The packaging is made of environmentally friendly materials, which may be disposed of through your local recycling facilities. By disposing of the packaging and packaging waste in the proper manner, you help to avoid possible hazards for the environment and public health.
9.3 DISPOSAL OF THE BATTERIES
The Luma’s computer contains a battery. Batteries may not be disposed of with the usual domestic waste. They may contain toxic heavy metals and are subject to hazardous waste regulations. For this reason, dispose of the Luma’s PC at a local collection point for the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. Do not attempt to open the PC and to remove the battery yourself.

This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
Note: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation.
If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:
- Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
- Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.
- Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected.
- Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.

If not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, this product may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this product does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, or any other form of communication, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:

WARRANTY
IMPORTANT: BY PURCHASING YOUR PROTO DEVICE YOU ARE AGREEING TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THE PROTO ONE (1) YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY (“WARRANTY”) AS SET OUT BELOW.
WHAT IS COVERED BY THIS WARRANTY?
PROTO Inc. of Van Nuys, California (“PROTO”) warrants the PROTO-branded hologram device hardware product contained in the original packaging (“PROTO Product”) against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with PROTO's published guidelines for a period of one (1) year from the date of shipment ("Warranty Period"). PROTO’s published guidelines include but are not limited to information contained in technical specifications, user manuals and service communications.
WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY THIS WARRANTY?
This Warranty does not apply to any non-PROTO branded hardware products or any software, even if packaged or sold with PROTO hardware. Manufacturers, suppliers, or publishers, other than PROTO, may provide their own warranties to you. Please contact them for further information. Software distributed by PROTO with or without the PROTO brand (including, but not limited to system software) is not covered by this Warranty. Please refer to the licensing agreement accompanying the software for details of your rights with respect to its use. PROTO does not warrant that the operation of the PROTO Product will be uninterrupted or error-free. PROTO is not responsible for damage arising from failure to follow instructions relating to the PROTO Product’s use.
This Warranty does not apply: (a) to cosmetic damage, including but not limited to scratches, dents and broken glass on ports unless failure has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; (b) to damage caused by use with a third party component or product that does not meet the PROTO Product’s specifications (PROTO Product specifications are available at www.protohologram.com under the technical specifications for the product); (c) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, fire, liquid contact, earthquake or other external cause; (d) to damage caused by operating the PROTO Product outside PROTO’s published guidelines; (e) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of PROTO or a PROTO Authorized Service Provider (“PASP”); (f) to a PROTO Product that has been modified to alter functionality or capability without the written permission of PROTO; (g) to defects caused by normal wear and tear or otherwise due to the normal aging of the PROTO Product; (h) if any serial number has been removed or defaced from the PROTO Product; or (i) if PROTO receives information from relevant public authorities that the product has been stolen or if you are unable to deactivate passcode-enabled or other security measures designed to prevent unauthorized access to the PROTO Product.
IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR PROTO HOLOGRAM SERVICE.
PROTO may restrict warranty service for the PROTO hologram device to the country where PROTO or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
YOU SHOULD MAKE PERIODIC BACKUP COPIES OF THE INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THE PROTO PRODUCT STORAGE MEDIA TO PROTECT THE CONTENTS AND AS A PRECAUTION AGAINST POSSIBLE OPERATIONAL FAILURES.
Before receiving warranty service, PROTO or its agents may require that you respond to questions designed to assist with diagnosing potential issues and follow PROTO's procedures for obtaining warranty service. Before submitting your PROTO Product for warranty service you should maintain a separate backup copy of the contents of its storage media, remove all personal information that you want to protect and disable all security passwords.
DURING WARRANTY SERVICE THE CONTENTS OF THE STORAGE MEDIA MAY BE DELETED AND REFORMATTED. PROTO AND ITS AGENTS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOSS OF SOFTWARE PROGRAMS, DATA OR OTHER INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THE STORAGE MEDIA OR ANY OTHER PART OF THE PROTO PRODUCT SERVICED.
Following warranty service your PROTO Product or a replacement device will be returned to you as your PROTO Product was configured when originally purchased, subject to applicable updates. PROTO may install system software updates as part of warranty service that will prevent the PROTO Product from reverting to an earlier version of the system software. Third party applications installed on the PROTO Product may not be compatible or work with the PROTO Product as a result of the system software update. You will be responsible for reinstalling all other software programs, data and information. Recovery and reinstallation of other software programs, data and information are not covered under this Warranty.
Important: Do not open the PROTO Product. Opening the PROTO Product may cause damage that is not covered by this Warranty. Only PROTO or a PASP should perform service on this PROTO Product.
WHAT WILL PROTO DO IN THE EVENT A CLAIM IS SUBMITTED?
If during the Warranty Period you submit a claim to PROTO or a PASP in accordance with this warranty, PROTO will, at its option:
(i) repair or service the PROTO Product using new or previously used parts that are equivalent to new in performance and reliability, or
(ii) replace the PROTO Product with the same model (or with your consent a product that has similar functionality) formed from new and/or previously used parts that are equivalent to new in performance and reliability.
PROTO may request that you replace certain user-installable parts or PROTO Products. A replacement part or PROTO Product, including a user-installable part that has been installed in accordance with instructions provided by PROTO, assumes the remaining term of the Warranty or ninety (90) days from the date of replacement or repair, whichever provides longer coverage for you. When a PROTO Product or part is replaced or a refund provided, any replacement item becomes your property and the replaced or refunded item becomes PROTO's property.
HOW TO OBTAIN WARRANTY SERVICE?
Please access and review the online help resources described below before seeking warranty service. If the PROTO Product is still not functioning properly after making use of these resources, please contact a PROTO representative or, if applicable, a PASP, using the information provided below. A PROTO representative or PASP will help determine whether your PROTO Product requires service and, if it does, will inform you how PROTO will provide it. When contacting PROTO via telephone, other charges may apply depending on your location. Online information with details on obtaining warranty service is provided below.
WARRANTY SERVICE OPTIONS
A deductible of $100 applies if a PROTO representative or PASP needs to visit your location to fix your PROTO Product. We may offer warranty service through a PASP in your area, if available. We reserve the right to choose the most suitable way to service your PROTO Product, considering availability in your country. Service options, parts availability, and response times may vary by location. If your PROTO Product can’t be serviced locally, you will be responsible for shipping, handling and/or travel charges.
Please note that you are responsible for all costs and expenses incurred during a triage event or crisis where PROTO and/or a PASP discovers that the device was damaged or made inoperable as a result of your actions or negligence not covered under this Warranty.
EXCEPT AS PROVIDED IN THIS WARRANTY AND TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, PROTO IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES RESULTING FROM ANY BREACH OF WARRANTY OR CONDITION, OR UNDER ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF USE; LOSS OF REVENUE; LOSS OF ACTUAL OR ANTICIPATED PROFITS (INCLUDING LOSS OF PROFITS ON CONTRACTS); LOSS OF THE USE OF MONEY; LOSS OF ANTICIPATED SAVINGS; LOSS OF BUSINESS; LOSS OF OPPORTUNITY; LOSS OF GOODWILL; LOSS OF REPUTATION; LOSS OF, DAMAGE TO, COMPROMISE OR CORRUPTION OF DATA; OR ANY INDIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL LOSS OR DAMAGE HOWSOEVER CAUSED INCLUDING THE REPLACEMENT OF EQUIPMENT AND PROPERTY, ANY COSTS OF RECOVERING, PROGRAMMING, OR REPRODUCING ANY PROGRAM OR DATA STORED IN OR USED WITH THE PROTO PRODUCT OR ANY FAILURE TO MAINTAIN THE CONFIDENTIALITY OF INFORMATION STORED ON THE PROTO PRODUCT.
PROTO DISCLAIMS ANY REPRESENTATION THAT IT WILL BE ABLE TO REPAIR ANY PROTO PRODUCT UNDER THIS WARRANTY OR REPLACE THE PROTO PRODUCT WITHOUT RISK TO OR LOSS OF INFORMATION STORED IN THE PROTO PRODUCT.
GENERAL
No PROTO agent, or employee is authorized to make any modification, extension, or addition to this Warranty. If any term is held to be illegal or unenforceable, the legality or enforceability of the remaining terms shall not be affected or impaired. This Warranty is governed by and construed under the laws of the country in which the PROTO Product purchase took place. PROTO or its successor in title is the warrantor under this Warranty.
